What does a webmaster do exactly?

In Webmaster Resources | on April, 24, 2011 | by | 0 Comments

A webmaster is entrusted with the task of maintaining a website, and dealing with any technicalities that surround this. They are the force behind ensuring that a website is in proper function, and that no errors are experienced whatsoever. Though most webmasters deal with the software aspect of web maintenance, it is not unusual to get one who involves themselves in the hardware aspects of it. This is more so the case when they are working with a website that has its own server. Ensuring consistency between the hardware and the software is not an easy task, as one would imagine, because it demands some knowledge in engineering science, as well as programming.

A webmaster can do all sorts related to a website. As long as it falls under his jurisdiction expertise, then they are expected to know it. There are of course those webmasters who choose to specialize in one area of web maintenance, such as an analysis of traffic inflow, and putting down measures to increase its turnover. And there are those who take part in this, and all other areas such as web design, server configurations, and language coding. This is what a webmaster is paid to do. Needless to say, the more the tasks that he can accomplish, the more he earns.

What a webmaster does is entirely dependent on his work setting. On a large company’s website, where the technical demands are far too many, a webmaster is only entrusted with one task, and it’s mostly a technical one. They are expected to stay alert, and troubleshoot problems that may arise. With a lot of traffic generation, more awareness needs to be exercised to ensure no downtimes are experienced, and that the web layout is intuitive enough for any kind of user. Regular updating of web content is necessary if the site gets hundreds of thousands of repeat visitors, and this task is delegated again, to a webmaster. They may not necessarily need to create the content, but they will regulate its quality, and judge whether it’s good enough to be posted on the website.

Security concerns of a website need to be addressed, and a webmaster is responsible for this. They determine what level of security to be put, the kind of firewalls that are most protective, as well as develop the encryptions necessary to secure visitor data. One that is experienced in this area and with a lot of expertise is relied on when the site holds things such as credit card details and bank details. For a site that allows online transactions, the highest levels of security have to be achieved.

A webmaster that has risen to the top of the field is usually appointed as a chief technological officer, or the chief web officer. These are some pretty respectable titles, especially for websites that generate hundreds of thousands in revenue every month. At the top, they have more of a supervisory and consultancy role, monitoring every aspect of the websites and delegating maintenance tasks to the different webmasters under them.
